Can You Wear Makeup After Fillers? And Other Common Questions!

Fillers are popular for a lot of reasons. They do not require any surgery and are fast to deliver beautiful results. While fillers are incredibly advanced and multi-functional, there are still a few do’s and don'ts that you should follow before your treatment. Dr. Mettu, an oculofacial plastic surgeon in Raleigh helped us answer popular questions like, “How do fillers work?”, “How long does it take to heal from fillers?” and “Can you wear makeup after fillers?”

Who Benefits from Fillers?

You might want to improve a few subtle details on your face. Maybe your under eye area is a little hollow or you feel like your temples are deflated. You could also be someone who is looking to make more noticeable changes to their face in order to regain lost confidence and build beautiful symmetry across all of your features. No matter what your circumstance is, there may be a filler treatment that is right for you. At your consultation, Dr. Mettu will discuss your concerns and customize a treatment plan.

How Do Fillers Work?

Simply put, fillers are injectable treatments that can add fullness to areas of the face. They are administered through a syringe and a thin needle or a blunt cannula that goes directly into the targeted treatment area.

During the injection process, Dr. Mettu will use sterile technique to inject filler into your areas of concern. Dr. Mettu may use topical or injectable local anesthetic to minimize pain. The treatments are well tolerated though you may be swollen in the days following your appointment.

How Long Does It Take to Heal from Fillers?

White there are risks with any treatment, the risks associated with fillers are low with an experienced surgeon injector like Dr. Mettu. There will be an initial recovery period after each injection. The swelling (and sometimes bruising) after your session will subside within a few days to a week or so. While you may notice some early improvements, it may take a couple of weeks to see the final results of treatment. There are a few things you can do in the meantime to make sure that your recovery is comfortable, smooth, and free of any complications:

  • Drink plenty of water as you heal.

  • Refrain from touching or massaging the treatment area unless you are advised to do so. Though it may look or feel fully healed, you need to be gentle for a few weeks to make sure you have healed well.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise like running or working out following your treatment. This can shift the filler out of place, giving you less than satisfactory results.

  • Follow the detailed instructions provided by Dr. Mettu and his team after the injection.

Can You Wear Makeup Right Away After Getting Fillers?

One of the most popular questions we get regarding fillers is about makeup. Is it possible to put on some makeup immediately following your filler treatment? Will it seriously damage your results? It is recommended that you avoid make up and your usual skincare routine for 24 hours. This will allow for sufficient time for the needle entry points in the skin to heal which will reduce the risk of infection.
