Will Upper Blepharoplasty Leave Scars? And Other Common Questions!

You may be aware that upper blepharoplasty is a common procedure that can deliver exceptional results. But will upper eyelid surgery leave scars? Below, we will review how the procedure works and what you can expect with regard to outcomes and touch on a few other common questions.

What Is Upper Blepharoplasty?

Upper blepharoplasty is a customizable surgery designed to remove excess skin and contour the upper eyelid. Sometimes, in addition to skin removal, the upper eyelid fat is contoured, the lacrimal gland is repositioned, and/or the eyelid crease is reformed. Ultimately, Dr. Mettu develops a specific plan to help you achieve the best results.

Who Benefits from Upper Blepharoplasty?

If you have concerns about extra skin of the upper eyelid, fat bulges of the upper eyelid, or a poorly defined crease/eyelid platform of upper eyelid (no place to put make up), then you may benefit from an upper blepharoplasty. Upper blepharoplasty is a specific type of upper eyelid surgery that provides a long lasting cosmetic enhancement.

Additional Common Questions

You may have a lot of questions about upper blepharoplasty. At your initial consultation with Dr. Mettu, all of your questions will be answered. In the meantime, we will touch on a few common questions that we receive from our patients.

Will Upper Eyelid Surgery Leave Scars?

There are several different techniques used to achieve your desired blepharoplasty results. Fortunately, after upper blepharoplasty, notable scarring is exceptionally rare. Most of our patients note that any scars:

  • Have completely faded

  • Or are small and hidden in natural eyelid folds

The incision line usually fades to become imperceptible. Either way, Dr. Mettu takes great care to make incisions in the natural eyelid crease so the scars are not visible, giving you a beautifully refreshed and natural look.

Does Upper Blepharoplasty Hurt?

We use general anesthesia during our surgeries, so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. As an outpatient procedure, upper eyelid surgery allows you to return home on the same day. You can expect bruising and swelling for up to two weeks following your surgery.

There are ways to optimize a smooth recovery process. For example:

  • You can plan your recovery in advance by entrusting a friend or family member to assist in your care for the first 24 hours after anesthesia.

  • You can take a week off of work if possible.

  • You can avoid strenuous activity and exercise until day 11 after the surgery.

  • You can review and follow the post-operative instructions provided by Dr. Mettu prior to surgery.

When Do Upper Eyelid Surgery Results Appear?

The recovery process typically takes between four and six months. However, you will start to see the results of your surgery much sooner.

  • Within around two weeks, the obvious swelling and bruising has resolved for most patients.

  • Once the swelling has diminished, you will notice an improved and youthful eyelid appearance.

  • Scars continue to fade over the course of the year but are typically not noticeable (even right after surgery) since the incisions are hidden in the eyelid crease.

Smoother, tighter, and more symmetrical eyelids will help you achieve all of your aesthetic goals. Be sure to follow the instructions Dr. Mettu provides prior to surgery to expedite your healing and to obtain the best possible results. Following all your pre and post-procedure instructions plays a large role in your healing including the resolution of scars. By facilitating proper healing, you can minimize scarring.
