Eyelid Bumps/Lesions

There are many different types of eyelid bumps or lesions. Some are inflammatory in nature such as styes (acute inflammation of the hair follicle or oil glands in the eyelids) and chalazia (chronic inflammation of the oil glands in the eyelids). The majority of styes and chalazia resolve with medical management. Chalazia that fail medical management can be injected with medicine or can be incised and drained.

Other common lesions include abnormal growths of the skin. These include both benign lesions such as cysts as well as malignant lesions such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Dr. Mettu evaluates such skin lesions and performs excision and biopsy when indicated. Depending on the diagnosis, further surgery may be necessary.
